2015 Human Development Report to deal with the concept of “work”

Activities on women’s human rights implemented within the UN Joint Programme assessed

The Advisory Committee of UN Joint Programme for Promoting the Human Rights of Women was summoned in 23 February in Gaziantep.

Ankara, March 2015

In the meeting, the activities conducted under the scope of the UN Joint Programme, which started in 2013, were assessed.

UN Joint Programme is implemented by UNDP, UN Women, Sabancı Foundation and Sabancı University with the partnership of the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Family and Social Policies and the Turkish Union of Municipalities.

The Programme works for the development of sustainable capacities in order to accelerate the implementation of gender equality commitments at the local level and contribute to promote, protect and exercise women’s rights.

The Joint Programme focuses on three areas: Gender-responsive budgeting, Sabancı Foundation Grant Programme and the Purple Certificate Programme.

The opening speeches of the Advisory Committee meeting were delivered by Güler Sabancı, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Sabancı Foundation; Ingibjorg Gisladottir, UN Women Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia and Representative to Turkey, Kamal Malhotra, UNDP Resident Representative in Turkey and Fatma Şahin, the Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality.

Kamal Malhotra stated that the brutal murder of Özgecan Aslan has once again shown that interventions about gender equality at the local level become even more critical. He then underlined that with the activities of the Joint Programme, women CSOs developed their capacity and formed active platforms on monitoring gender related activities in their provinces.

Football titans and UNDP Goodwill Ambassadors, Ronaldo and Zidane will hit the pitch to help boost support for Ebola recovery efforts

12th Match against Poverty to take place in Saint-Etienne, France on Monday 20 April 2015.

Ankara, March 2015

Football legends and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassadors Ronaldo and Zinédine Zidane will team up with other football greats for a match against an All-Star team to help boost Ebola recovery efforts at the 12th Match against Poverty.

The star-filled friendly against top-tier French club Association Sportive de Saint-Etienne (ASSE) is set for 8pm local time (7pm GMT) on Monday 20 April at St-Etienne’s Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium. Ticket prices range from 8 to 12 Euros and are on sale here.

Two thirds of all proceeds will go towards helping the hardest-hit countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone build back better from the Ebola epidemic. The remaining third will go to the Club’s Association, ASSE Coeur-Vert, which supports social projects in Saint-Etienne.

"While efforts to stop Ebola are continuing, thorough recovery from its many consequences for the societies and economies of the epicentre countries must be planned now" said UNDP Administrator Helen Clark in Conakry, Guinea’s capital on 12 February.

"Millions of lives and livelihoods have been hit hard. We must all team up for the long term and support these countries to recover" she said.

Ms. Clark is visiting the three epicentre countries to affirm the UN’s continuing commitment to address the ongoing crisis and support for the recovery process.

The impact of the epidemic has made it far harder for millions of the poorest and most vulnerable people to make a living and the socio-economic impact will last long after the disease has been brought under control. The crisis is also fueling stigmatisation and further social and economic hardship.

UNDP is leading the UN’s actions on Ebola recovery and is coordinating early recovery actions in the three countries.

“Governments, development partners, NGOs and the private sector all have roles to play to support these countries as they recover from this crisis and equip them to deal with future shocks"  Helen Clark said.

“There will be no recovery if the transmission of the disease isn’t stopped, and without reconstruction of the social and economic fabric which has been damaged by the outbreak” she added.

UNDP programmes have helped authorities keep essential services running, worked with communities to identify cases, trace contacts and provide vital information on preventing the disease and helped thousands of Ebola response workers get paid on time.

UNDP has also conducted impact assessments to help inform national recovery plans.

Ronaldo, one of football’s best known Brazilian strikers, highlighted his motivation for joining the annual matches and called for more support for Ebola recovery: “We are delighted to play a part in helping people, communities and countries get back on their feet after the damage that Ebola has caused” he said.

France’s celebrated attacking midfielder Zinédine Zidane echoed the call for support: “Ebola isn’t over until the last case is treated, and we must stand by these countries for their long term” he said.

Since 2003, 11 Matches against Poverty have raised nearly US$ 4 million to support post-earthquake reconstruction in Haiti and Pakistan, Typhoon recovery in the Philippines, post-famine relief in the Horn of Africa and anti-poverty projects in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

Roland Romeyer, Chairman of ASSE, hailed the people of Saint Etienne’s commitment to ending poverty and their love of the beautiful game: “Saint-Etienne’s population is characterized by its solidarity and solid passion for football” he said.

“The Match against Poverty has all the assets to attract spectators to an event that binds football and solidarity.”

ASSE is the most successful national club in French football history, having won ten Ligue one titles, six Coupe de France titles and a Coupe de la Ligue title.

The Match is supported by football’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and organised in partnership with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

Tickets will be on sale at: http://www.asse.fr and ticket counters of the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, 14, rue Paul et Pierre Guichard, 42000 Saint-Etienne.

2015 Human Development Report to deal with the concept of “work”

Selim Jahan, the Director of Human Development Report Office, announced the theme of 2015 Human Development Report on 3 February on Human Development Report website. Selim Jahan stated that the theme of Human Development Report of 2015 will be ‘Rethinking Work for Human Development’.

Ankara, March 2015

Global Human Development Reports, published annually by UNDP, are publications where remarkable progress in development is demonstrated.

Selim Jahan announced the focus of 2015 Human Development Report will be ‘work’.

He explained the reasons why they chose this concept, “We are talking about work, not necessarily jobs and employment. Jobs and employment are somewhat of a narrow concept. There is an input-output kind of a discussion there, you have pre-assigned tasks, you have pre-assigned hours, you are remunerated for those kind of tasks that you do. But here we are talking about work, which definitely includes job and employment but goes beyond that.”

Selim Jahan highlighted that they will look at the concept of work from a broader perspective and include the creative work, the work of literary personalities, artistic work, the work of artists.

In addition to creative work, the concept of care work will also be dealt with under the concept of work throughout the report.

Selim Jahan stated why the concept of work is important for human development, “All these non-job, non-employment kind of work are important for human development because they basically contribute to human well-being, they contribute to social cohesion, they contribute to understanding each other, interconnectedness of people. So therefore, from a human development perspective, work, rather than narrow jobs and employment are a more relevant, useful and insightful concept.”

2015 Human Development Report is planned to be published on November 2015.

Modernising Building Energy Codes to Secure our Global Energy Future

Buildings are the largest consumers of energy worldwide and will continue to be a source of increasing energy demand in the future.

Ankara, March 2015

Globally, the sector’s final consumption doubled between 1971 and 2010, driven primarily by population increase and economic growth.

Global energy demand of buildings is projected to grow by an additional 30% by 2035. In many International Energy Agency (IEA) member countries, the buildings sector accounts for over 40% of primary energy consumption.

Circumstances in Turkey are similar. Between 2000 and 2012, the building stock and the dwelling stock grew around 11.5% and 23.2%, respectively.

Such rates of increase underline the importance of energy-saving measures in the building sector. The building and services sector in Turkey is the second largest energy-consuming sector with a 34.5% share of total consumption.

In this regard, “Modernising Building Energy Codes to Secure our Global Energy Future”, a joint report of IEA and UNDP is translated to Turkish and is published in the context of Promoting Energy Efficiency in Buildings in Turkey Project.

Part of the IEA Policy Pathway series, this report sets out key steps in the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation stages.

Policy Pathway series provide details on how to implement specific recommendations drawn from IEA 25 Energy Efficiency Policy Recommendations.

Based on direct experience, published research, expert workshops and best-practice country case studies, the series aims to provide guidance to all countries on the essential steps and milestones in implementing specific energy efficiency policies.

This report which is published in the context of Project on Promoting Energy Efficincy in Buildings in Turkey, is designed for policy makers at all levels of government and other relevant stakeholders who seek practical ways to develop, support, monitor or modify energy efficiency policies in their home country and abroad.
