Successful works in organic agriculture sector in Southeast Anatolia Region

Successful works in organic agriculture sector were shared with the stakeholders and members of the newly established GAP Organic Agriculture Cluster Association (GAP ORKÜDER) in a meeting in Şanlıurfa on 25 January 2016 hosted by GAP Regional Development Administration.

February 2017

GAP Organic Agriculture Cluster Project is being executed by GAP Regional Development Administration with the technical assistance of UNDP since 2009. Several pilot projects in different locations with various product patterns are being implemented in the region to contribute to the aim of creating scalable and replicable success stories.

GAPOrganic Value Chain Pilot Projects Financial Support Program, first of its kind in Turkey, was designed to appeal to all circles of organic sector value chain in Southeast Anatolia Region. And is being implementedin partnership and coordination with İpekyolu Development Agency, Karacadağ Development Agency and Dicle Development Agency. Through the implementation of pilot projects, 9 million TL will be mobilized for Southeast Anatolia Region.

Moreover, the project ensured the participation of active producers, unions, cooperatives from the region to the fairs such as BIOFACH, Ecology İzmir, Exponatura Istanbul to promote organic products of the region and to extend marketing opportunities. In addition to that, various trainings were provided and study visits were organized to develop institutional capacity.

Periodic meetings were organizedwith organic food and organic textile working groups to identify the needs of the region and the sector and organize necessary activities accordingly.

The GAP Organic Agriculture Portal was launched with its new design and content to contribute to the aim of creating scalable and replicable success stories, developing production and marketing infrastructure and enhancing the cooperation among the actors within the context of the GAP Organic Agriculture Cluster Project.  Also the right of usage of this portal was transferred to GAP ORKÜDER through protocol ceremony.

GAP Organic Agriculture Cluster Association (GAP ORKÜDER) is founded in 3 June 2016 in order to ensure the sustainability and institutionalization of the activities realized again within the context of the project and the first General Assembly was carried out in 17 November 2016.

A new tool for encouraging female high school students to select engineering departments in university

Within the context of Turkey’s Engineer Girls (TEG) Project, a partnership with Middle East Technical University’s Interdisciplinary Design Studio has been started to design a campaign for high school students to encourage them to select engineering departments in university.

February 2017

Within the context of Turkey’s Engineer Girls (TEG) Project, a partnership with Middle East Technical University’s Interdisciplinary Design Studio has been started to design a campaign for high school students to encourage them to select engineering departments in university.

METU Design Studio brought together researchers and students from design studies, engineering sciences, social sciences, and other related fields in order to develop new and innovative products. Through this interdisciplinary collaboration, within 10 weeks of educational semester, Design Studio developed a tool to be used to change the perception determined by gender stereotypes within the high schools students and their families.

Idea development, design and prototyping phases were conducted by a team of students from different departments and mentored by two academic and one industry mentor in Design Studio. During the designing phase Design Studio team met TEG project team many times and as a result of collaborative working and design thinking approach a board game was designed. The final prototype is planned to be used in the high school campaigns of the TEG Project in order to increase awareness of female high school students for selection of engineering profession. This prototype will be improved and is planned to be used in pilot high schools.

Turkey’s Engineer Girls (TEG) Project which is implemented in cooperation with UNDP, Ministry of Family and Social Policies and Limak Foundation, aims at development of private sector led prototypes for inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the services and manufacturing sectors benefiting from gender equality mainstreaming and advocacy and dissemination of the success stories within the public and private sector.

Company visits continued in January within the context of the project, in which the obstacles leading to productivity problems in the manufacturing industry are spotted and a policy framework is being developed to resolve these problems. 87 out of 100 large-scaled manufacturer companies were reached for conducting surveys. Also, 120 out of 400 medium-scaled manufacturer companies were reached until today. Besides, data sets for 1250 companies were submitted within the context of the field work regarding the 2500 small-scaled last-chain suppliers. 1500 companies were reached as a result of the ongoing surveys.

In February, the works will be accelerated under the light of the initial survey results and preparations will be launched for the synthesis report.
